Bradford County Crossover

Roofing in Starke, FL

Starke is 35 minutes north of Gainesville in Bradford County — the county seat and the largest community we serve outside Alachua County. We cross over regularly for jobs along the US-301 corridor and into the surrounding rural area. Mostly shingle and metal, with a strong rural and small-town residential mix.

Starke is the county seat of Bradford County, just north of the Alachua County line along US-301. The city is about 5,500 residents with a much larger surrounding rural service area. While most of our work is concentrated in Alachua County, we cross over into Bradford County regularly — primarily for jobs along the US-301 corridor, in the historic downtown Starke area, and on the rural properties radiating out toward the Union County line and the prison facilities at Raiford.

The Starke-area roofing landscape is similar to the rural northeast Alachua County zones (Waldo, the eastern reaches of Hawthorne) but with somewhat smaller average property sizes and a slightly more residential feel within the city proper. Roofing mix is roughly two-thirds architectural shingle, one-third metal, with the metal share rising as you move out from downtown into the rural surrounding county.

Starke roofing patterns

Downtown Starke and surrounding residential — historic small-town housing stock around the courthouse and the main commercial district, plus mid-century and later residential extending out from the core. Mostly architectural shingle today, with some preserved historic metal roofs in the older neighborhoods. Project specs tend toward mid-grade rather than premium tier.

US-301 corridor properties — both commercial and residential properties along the US-301 highway, which is the primary north-south route through Bradford County. A mix of older roadside residential, gas stations and convenience stores, modest farms, and the occasional newer subdivision.

Rural Bradford County — extending out from Starke toward the Union County line, the Florida State Prison area, and the rural agricultural land that covers most of the county. Heavily metal-roofed, agricultural and rural-residential character similar to rural northeast Alachua County.

Approach to Lake Butler and Union County — west of Starke, our service area effectively ends as the drive time gets too long for cost-effective work. We've done occasional jobs out toward Lake Butler but it's not a routine service area for us.

Starke-specific considerations

Travel time — Starke is 35 minutes from our office in good traffic. Emergency response is correspondingly slower — typically 2 hours or more for active storm tarping. We can still serve Starke for emergency response but the staging is significantly more involved than for closer-in service areas.

Permit jurisdiction — Starke uses Bradford County's building department for permits, which is a different jurisdiction from our usual Alachua County work. The process is straightforward but slightly different — typically a few extra days on permit pulls compared to Alachua County.

Insurance market — Bradford County roofs face similar insurance pressure as Alachua County — aggressive non-renewal at the 15-year shingle mark, particularly from the carriers that have tightened their Florida underwriting standards over the last few years.

Project minimums — because of the travel time, we typically don't take very small repair jobs (single boot replacement, for example) in Starke unless we can package them with other nearby work. For full re-roofs and larger repairs, Starke is a routine service area and we're set up to handle the work efficiently.

US-301 staging — the highway access from Gainesville makes Starke logistically easier to reach than its drive time would suggest. Material delivery from Gainesville-area suppliers is also straightforward, with most major distributors covering Starke on their standard delivery routes.
